'Planet Terra Blog on how it began and what we sew: A Sustainable Journey'

Updated: Sep 21

Welcome.....this is how it began and what we sew.

Some days I introduce myself & Planet Terra by saying:

“I am the owner of Planet Terra and I sew stuff.”

Undoubtedly not the most eloquent or descriptive way to expand on what it is I do.

To begin this journey, I just wished to sew simple grocery bags which would replace single-use plastic bags our oceans are choking with, or which are breaking down into unrecoverable micro plastics in our landfills.

In the beginning I, or rather what I sewed, wished to be sustainable, eco-friendly, and long-lasting. Most of all, I wanted to ONLY use organic cotton.

However, as these things go, Planet Terra is constantly evolving. Not as many people as I expected to, truly mind whether a fabric is organic or just ordinary fabric. And funnily enough, not a single bag for the purpose of grocery shopping sold within my first 24 months of business. Ironic, huh?

What I found, though, is that I am able to sew gorgeously simple bags, pouches, totes and sleeves in a fabric you get to choose for yourself. And this is where my niche evolved. This is my ‘different’. You can pop into a large department store and purchase a superbly bargain-priced cosmetic bag… of which there are 10,000 the same of in the state. But if you wished for a pouch in a pretty fabric you spotted in my selection, then I could sew that for you 😊. And that is just nice for both of us.

Our journey over the last 2 years…..

Customers’ requests for zippered pockets and pouches with zippered closures scared the heeby-jeebies out of me. However, after more than two years, I believe I can say I can do those now 😊!

Cotton lining in a tote was a major achievement, now it is a minimum!

Fancy zipper pulls were non-existent, now you can choose!

Padded and quilted pouches to protect your iPad or laptop were unheard of, now.…. I can do that 😊!

At one stage very early on in this venture, I had used up every cotton canvas fabric I had purchased, …. I received an order and the customer wished to CHOOSE. To say I panicked is an understatement! I had NOTHING to show them. Since then, the range available has grown to a lovely size. Recently a customer requested a particular animal, and it was just a buzz to be able to send through a photo of a high-quality, Oeko-Tex Standard fabric with that animal on it. The customer placed her order immediately.

To be able to offer a high-end range of fabrics, all of them in 100% cotton or quality PUL, is purely for your convenience and benefit. There is no need to shop around for a collection of handmade items with a range of makers. You can place an order, for example, for a PUL wet bag, organic cotton burp cloths, a book sleeve and shopping totes all within Planet Terra and have them posted to you in one single parcel. We also have cards & gift boxes in various sizes available, and can send gifts straight to the lucky recipient.

[PS free shipping over $100.]

Thank you

for your support, and for taking the time to read my first blog. Thank you to all those customers who have placed their trust in me to sew their ideas for them, in 100% cotton, made by nature.

Your ideas are what make Planet Terra! Most items on our Website are ideas customers have at one stage put to me: “could you sew…..?”

Don’t be shy – ask me 😊.

Cheers  😊
